Nick Harvey is Professor of Rheumatology and Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Southampton, and co-leads an MRC programme focused on the lifecourse epidemiology of bone and joint disease, at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit. He originally trained in medicine at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge Medical Schools, with SHO training in Newcastle upon Tyne and Stoke on Trent. During his rheumatology specialty rotation in Wessex, he undertook his PhD at the then MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre, exploring the early life determinants of bone mass in children born to the Southampton Women’s Survey. Over the last decade his research has evolved to integrate, across the lifecourse, observational epidemiology and laboratory science to inform novel interventions aimed at reducing fracture risk. The aim of Professor Harvey’s research is to understand, across the lifecourse, what increases the risk of such osteoporotic fractures, to investigate mechanisms that explain these relationships, and to develop interventions which might improve bone mass and reduce fracture risk across populations.
